Santa Pod: Land Speed Record
Company managing director James Norvill is proud his new car is a load of rubbish - it's a skip with a top speed of 147mph. Businessman Mr Norvill snubbed the usual Jaguar or BMW of other top directors to spend 20,000 turning an ordinary rubbish skip into a bizarre supercar.

Mr Norvill, 27, said: "Some people like Ferraris or Lamborghinis but my skip is just great for me - it gets far more attention than any ordinary sports car.

"It is fantastic fun to drive with the added bonus that you don't have to worry too much about cleaning it out too often."

The Skipcar was built from a high-powered Subaru Impreza WRX Type R for Mr Norvill who runs his own skip hire company in Newport, South Wales.

It has a top speed of 147 mph, 300 break horse power and can hit nought to 60mph in 5.3 seconds.

Now he is claiming a world record for being the fastest skip on earth after taking it for a spin on a race track.

Mr. Norvill is celebrating after the four-wheel drive speed machine hit 93 mph on a 400m drag circuit in front of thousands of spectators at the Santa Pod race track in Northamptonshire.

Mr. Norvill, managing director of GD Environmental, said: "It is great fun to drive and a great way to publicize the business. It started out as a bit of a joke in the pub one night - but then we realised we could do it.

"We've basically stripped a Subaru Impreza and used it with a standard eight-yard skip to create the Skipcar. We will try to go even faster in the future - maybe we will fit some nitrous oxide to the back of it," he added.

The two-seater, which weighs 1.1 tonnes, took a team of mechanics a month to convert. Mr Norvill is now planning to don a Santa outfit to visit children in hospitals during the run up to Christmas.

He said: "You can't help but smile when you see it. I never get offended now when somebody tells me my car is just a load of rubbish."
